Role Description

You will work in one of the three laboratory units of the Service of Viral Diseases of the company. The expertise and research projects revolve around emerging and re-

emerging viruses, as well as respiratory viruses and vaccine-preventable viruses.


  • You will be responsible to conduct research and surveillance of viruses that are at risk of emerging in Belgium and can cause problems for public health.
  • Assist and advice authorities in case of outbreaks of crises
  • Develop open methods for detection of new of unknown viruses
  • Develop and validate diagnostic assays for viruses which are at risk of emerging
  • Write, develop and conduct research projects and publish your work in scientific journals
  • Requirements

  • PhD in the field of Virology or Viral Diseases
  • Experience with virus culture, infection assays and infectious diseases
  • Experience with high containment biosafety practices
  • Experience with molecular biology and sequencing
  • Knowledge with molecular epidemiology (phylogeny, source attribution, transmission routes, cluster analysis)
  • English, Dutch and French written and spoken
  • Experience with Project Management
