The Faculty of Law () is growing. Its mission is to understand and improve the role of the legal system within an evolving society.

The CORe (Centre for Government and Law, / core) research group focuses primarily on the relationship between citizens and authorities.

CORe conducts high level research in a number of domains and believes in the power of multidisciplinary research. By doing so, CORe develops tools that support living together at home, in the Euregion and in Europe.

Tax Law and Economic Law are part of CORe's research domains. The research will take place in close cooperation with the 'Centre for Law & Consumer' at Ghent University.

Research activities

The PhD student carries out high level research within the Centre for Government and Law ( / core). The topic of the research is Taxpayer or customer?

An inductive inquiry into fiscal outsourcing’ to private service providers on the basis of the Belgian distance charge’.

The research should result in a PhD dissertation within the framework of a joint PhD between UHasselt and Ghent University.

Even though the research will take place primarily at UHasselt, the researcher will regularly be present at Ghent University.

The PhD student also publishes in (inter)national peer-reviewed scientific journals and books and actively takes part in (inter)national conferences relating to his / her field of research.

The PhD student will undertake research stays abroad.

The research is financed by means of a senior research project awarded by FWO-Flanders to the (co)supervisors of UHasselt and Ghent University.

Teaching assignment

The PhD student has a limited teaching assignment related to the field of law, more precisely as a tutor who supervises tutorial group meeting at UHasselt.

The PhD student will also supervise bachelor's and master's theses at UHasselt and Ghent University.


  • You obtained a Master of Laws degree (or equivalent)
  • Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.

  • You obtained very good to excellent study results.
  • You have demonstrable experience or a demonstrable strong interest in tax law and economic law.
  • You are willing to take part in a professionalisation of teaching’ trajectory.
  • For both domestic and foreign applicants, knowledge of Dutch, French and English is required.
  • You are highly motivated for conducting research.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • You are a good team player and are swiftly able to establish contacts with experts in your field of research.
  • Offer

    You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.

    PhD scholarship for a period of 2 years (renewable on the basis of a positive interim evaluation). Preferred starting date : 1 October 2021.

    Selection procedure

    You can only apply online up to and including 30 April 2021 .

    The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file and an interview.

    Candidates should upload one written piece of work (master’s thesis, bachelor’s thesis, a published legal-scientific article, a legal essay, ) in Dutch, French or English.
