This is a project at the research group of Experimental Otorhinolaryngology (ExpORL), Dept. Neurosciences, which is part of the University of Leuven.

The overall goal of this project is to capture, via neural EEG-responses, how natural speech is processed in persons with aphasia, potentially leading to novel diagnostic applications.

Leuven is located at the center of Belgium, in the heart of Europe. The research at ExpORL is aimed at improving hearing and communication skills of persons with hearing or language impairment.

It covers the entire chain of auditory and speech modeling, signal processing, simulation, psychophysical tests, electro-physiological measurements, imaging, lab-implementation, and evaluation with normal hearing subjects, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants as well as neurological patients.

The research at ExpORL is strongly multidisciplinary, consisting of about 40 researchers from a variety of backgrounds (engineering, audiology, medicine, psychology, speech pathology,.

  • In particular, related to this project, there is expertise in multi-channel brain potential recordings, signal processing, source localisation, state-of-the-art MRI techniques as well as psychophysical experiments and cognitive language tests.
  • A PhD on a related topic (e.g., signal processing, EEG-analyses, speech processing, ...)At least 2 publications as first author in international peer-reviewed journalsAn background in engineering, physics or similarYou are not afraid to make your hands dirty and take the lead in advanced EEG-analysesExperience in processing EEG data is a strong plusKnowledge of auditory and language neuroscience is a benefit, but not crucialWillingness to work in an interdisciplinary teamAn interest in language and speech processingAn inquisitive and creative mind, good problem solving skillsThe ability to independently work and generate resultsBeing a team playerExcellent English proficiencyImportant note, your motivation letter should contain the reason why you are interested in this particular position as well as facts or examples that demonstrate that you satisfy the listed requirements.

The overall goal of this project is to capture, via neural EEG-responses, how natural speech is processed in persons with aphasia, potentially leading to novel diagnostic applications.

You will shape and validate analyses of neural tracking of speech and of source localisation in both healthy aging persons and neurological patients.

  • You will conduct your own research (sub)project, collaborating with PhD and postdoctoral researchers* You will develop EEG analyzing methods for neural tracking of speech that provide an quantitative index of each language component and that can discriminate language problems from cognitive / attention problems in neurological patients* You will develop EEG source location methods to reliably identify neural responses for speech processing in the lesioned-brain
