ABOUT THE E-MEDIA RESEARCH LABThe e-Media Research Lab investigates, develops and implements novel techniques to enhance the human condition with embodied media.

Our systems contain sensors that capture input from a human user or information from the environment, algorithms that analyze these data, and intelligent systems with actuators that generate meaningful output.

Central to our research questions is how humans will perceive this output, and how they respond to it. Often we implement fully interactive systems that are fun and engaging, and at the same time serve a serious purpose.

Meaningful, embodied interactions are crucial. Applications are found in the domain of health care, learning and entertainment.

The e-Media Lab brings together expertise from different domains such as electrical engineering, signal processing, data analysis, machine learning, computer sciences, software engineering, social sciences and user experience design.

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Product Design or an equivalent degree
  • Having Research experience in the domain of TEI, preferably in the context of health care
  • Strong English writing and speaking skills
  • Within the domain of Tangible and Embodied Interaction (TEI), novel paradigms of human-computer interaction are investigated that better exploit the motor-perceptual and social skills of the users.

Such interactive systems are known to offer opportunities that go beyond those of the traditional desktop interface. In the past decades, TEI systems have been investigated in the context of health care, e.

    g. as a therapeutic tool for people suffering from (neuro-)motor disorders, as a training tool for health care professionals, or as a learning tool for children with motor and / or cognitive impairments.

We offer a post-doc position that allows you to set up new projects within the field of TEI for health applications, in coordination with your supervisor.

Sufficient time and resources will be made available to carry out your own ideas, in collaboration with students (MSc and PhD), professors and experts in the applicable health domain.

You will be involved in the writing of journal or conference publications and grant proposals, and assist in the supervision of MSc and PhD students.

This position also includes an important role in our new advanced master program in Innovative Health Technology. You will be involved in setting up project work for students, and the organization of seminars with external speakers.

You will be involved in building up and maintaining a network of industrial partners and health care organizations.

This fully-funded position will be established in the e-Media Research Lab of the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the KU Leuven in Belgium under the supervision of Prof. Dr Luc Geurts.
