  • At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • Development of workflows to Retrieve, process and curate plant trait information from dedicated databases and literature (via text-mining and natural language processing).
  • Process and store ontologies and gene-trait information in a relational database

  • Development and benchmarking of a command-line Nextflow pipeline to perform gene-trait discovery using single-cell RNA-Seq, network biology and curated plant trait data
  • Evaluation of the developed gene-trait discovery pipeline using newly generated single-cell datasets for different crop plants
  • Optional : interactions with (inter)national industrial / academic partners working on single-cell genomics and valorization.

    We are looking for a junior postdoctoral researcher to work on computational workflow development for single-cell data analysis in plants .

    This project is fully funded by UGent for 20 months (extension is possible) and ideally starts September 2021. The successful applicant will be part of the VIB-UGent (Vandepoele) lab, an international, diverse, and vibrant group of research fellows at different career levels.

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate in Bioinformatics, Computational biology or similar (obtained max. 2 years ago. This term of 2 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma).
  • Having good programming (Python) and Linux skills is a must; experience with Nextflow pipelines is an asset.
  • You like and have experience with software / workflow / tool development.
  • Knowledge in plant or single-cell biology is a plus but not essential.
  • You are enthusiastic about computational tool development and want to learn more about applying computational biology for single-cell data analysis.
  • You have good communication skills and are proficient in English.

  • We offer you a contract of fixed duration with a maximum term of almost 2 years.
  • Your contract will start on 1 / 09 / 2021 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1. .
