ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 8,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis.
It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
The project focuses on the role of e-fuels in the future Belgian energy system, in which power-to-x-to-power systems could play a role.
The general aim is to develop a holistic model to provide insight in the role of these energy carriers in the energy system, as well as their energy and economic costs.
One of the areas looked into is the efficiency with which electricity can be generated from e-fuels
and the future market demand for e-fuels from hard-to-electrify applications. A PhD student is investigating the efficiency potential of dedicated methanol engines and how this efficiency scales with engine size (power output), through measurements on an engine test bench and 0D / 1D simulations.
further validate it; and use it to determine the optimum engine configuration of a dedicated hydrogen engine. Finally, you will assess how the efficiency scales with engine size to propose a scalable model that can be plugged into the overall holistic model.
You will also help with administering the project and supervising the PhD student.
