ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 8,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis.

It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • You will work on a Belgian Federal project funded from the Energy Transition Fund called BEST (Belgian Energy System Transition, see ).
  • The project focuses on the role of e-fuels in the future Belgian energy system, in which power-to-x-to-power systems could play a role.

    The general aim is to develop a holistic model to provide insight in the role of these energy carriers in the energy system, as well as their energy and economic costs.

    One of the areas looked into is the efficiency with which electricity can be generated from e-fuels

  • Ghent University’s tasks in the project focus on the efficiency potential of combustion engines operating on the e-fuels methanol and hydrogen;
  • and the future market demand for e-fuels from hard-to-electrify applications. A PhD student is investigating the efficiency potential of dedicated methanol engines and how this efficiency scales with engine size (power output), through measurements on an engine test bench and 0D / 1D simulations.

  • Your main job will be to evaluate the efficiency potential of hydrogen engines. You will refine a 0D / 1D model for a hydrogen spark ignition engine, that was built in the research group;
  • further validate it; and use it to determine the optimum engine configuration of a dedicated hydrogen engine. Finally, you will assess how the efficiency scales with engine size to propose a scalable model that can be plugged into the overall holistic model.

    You will also help with administering the project and supervising the PhD student.

    WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma).
  • This PhD degree is preferably in mechanical engineering or electromechanical engineering. PhD degrees in engineering physics, science or other similar competence will also be considered;
  • Your PhD is preferably in the field of combustion engines and alternative fuels;
  • You have extensive experience in engine simulation, preferably with experience in 0D / 1D simulation (thermodynamic and gasdynamic);
  • You have very good oral and written proficiency in English;
  • You have extensive experience presenting and reporting your work;
  • You take initiative and responsibility, are a problem solver and like working in a team
  • WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 1 + 1 years.
  • Your contract will start on 1 / 06 / 2021 at the earliest.
