The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of immune-informatics
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis. The PhD project makes part of an inter-University research project : the iBOF consortium "MIMICRY - Microbiome & Immune Modulation for effective Colorectal Cancer Immunotherapy".
Colorectal cancer tumors are often unresponsive to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy (a form of immunotherapy that is effective in treating other types of cancer).
This study will investigate the immunosuppressive mechanisms in these tumors to find an explanation for the immune tolerance.
During your PhD you will develop computational models to improve the identification of epitopes in immunopeptidomics experiments and to link these with patterns in T cell receptor repertoires.
You will work closely with other researchers who will carry out the experimental lab analyses and provide the necessary data.
You work in a multidisciplinary bioinformatics research group where, among other things, data mining research is done on the adaptive immune system.
You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
You will present your results at national and international conferences.
You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Adrem Data Lab within the Department of Computer Science.
You hold a Master degree in life sciences (biomedical Sciences, bio-engineering sciences, bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry.
physics, mathematics or computer science or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
You can demonstrate excellent study results and are motivated to write a grant to obtain a PhD fellowship.
You are proficient in dealing with data, and you are enthusiastic to strengthen your bioinformatics and data mining skills.
Having an interest in immunonology and cancer research is a must.
You are goal oriented and you can work independently

What we offer
We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
The planned start date is negotiable.
Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch : Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
You will do most of your work at the Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
