We are seeking a recognized scientific leader to join our Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) team as Sr Principal Scientist to advance the discovery of new therapeutic candidates using advances in machine learning & data science.

This position is based in Braine L’alleud, Belgium or Slough, UK and is expected to collaborate effectively across our research sites in the US, including in Belgium & the UK.

  • Proactively thinks of ways to accelerate the design and optimization of molecules to NCE (new chemical entities) projects.
  • Able to foresee challenges and propose solutions.

  • Create effective working relationships & interface across multiple internal disciplines IT, DMPK, Safety, Chemistry & Data Sciences and beyond via influencing and networking.
  • Champions effective optimization of drug discovery processes through application of data-driven predictive methods and AI-based generative design methodologies.
  • Effectively solicits input and feedback and drives innovation.

  • Contribute to CADD technology acquisition, development, implementation and applications to pipeline projects through effective project management and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Build a culture of data-driven decision making through the judicious application of recent advances in property predictions & generative molecular design methods.
  • Proven scientific leadership and excellent communication skills. Acts as an ambassador for CADD by providing scientific expertise / leadership at cross-disciplinary meetings and departmental meetings.
  • Understands UCB R&D strategy and contributes to its implementation. Acts as advisor and driver of change with senior management.
  • Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills :

  • 15+ years of drug discovery experience, working across multiple therapeutic areas including neuroscience, immunology therapeutic including project leadership roles.
  • Excellent knowledge in applying principles of medicinal chemistry toward drug discovery.
  • Proven track record of accelerating drug discovery through application of machine learning and data analytics / science.
  • Demonstrated examples of NCE candidate delivery.
  • Expert knowledge in structure-based and ligand-based small molecule drug design.
  • A PhD in Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Molecular Modeling or a related field is required with a good publication / patent track record.
  • Ability to influence and impact beyond immediate area of responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
